Hibiscus & Orange Tea Scones

Hibiscus and Orange tea Scones, how fancy do these sound! Impress your friends and family with these cute and fresh scones. Perfect for a quick breakfast, midday coffee or tea break, or even a late night snack. I have never really cooked or baked with loose tea, but after making these delicious treats I think I might have to! Hibiscus passion fruit tea and orange extract makes for an excellent light and flavorful scone. These are not too sweet and the tea is not over powering, everything comes together nicely, and all in about 40 minutes! I used Tazo Iced Passion ( Below) and it added a wonderful unique taste. You could really interchange any tea/ fruit you want in this recipe.


Preheat your oven to 400º. Start by mixing your dry ingredients together, flour, sugar, baking powder, salt and your loose tea. Using cold butter, cut in the butter using a pastry cutter or a fork until the butter is completely mixed in. In a small bowl mix you wet ingredients together, heavy cream ( I used milk and they turned out just fine), your egg, orange extract and vanilla extract. Make a small well in the middle of your dry ingredients and add in your wet ingredients.


Mix together until a dough starts to form, it may seem a bit dry but you may just have to use your hands to get all the flour incorporated. Place your dough on the counter, it may be dusted with flour but doesn’t need to be. Use your hands to press the dough out into a square about 7″ x 7″, it doesn’t have to be perfect. Than cut the square into equal squares and cut each square in half to form a triangle. I cut mine into 8 squares, so 16 triangles. Place on a sheet pan lined with parchment paper or a non stick mat and bake 12-17 minutes until golden brown.


To finish these off, you can top them with a glaze if you would like, but it is not necessary, I made a quick glaze with powdered sugar, milk, vanilla extract and a little more orange extract. Pour the glaze on top and your done, beautiful, unique scones you can impress everyone with!

  1. 2 cups flour
  2. 1/3 cup sugar
  3. 1 tbsp baking powder
  4. 1/2 tsp salt
  5. 8 tbsp cold unsalted butter
  6. 1/2 cup heavy cream
  7. 1 egg
  8. 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  9. 1/2 tsp orange extract
  10. 2 tbsp loose hibiscus tea
Orange Glaze
  1. 3/4 cup powdered sugar
  2. 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  3. 1/2 tsp orange extract
  4. 1/4 cup milk
For the Scones
  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
  2. In a medium bowl, mix dry ingredients together, flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and tea.
  3. Add cold butter cubes and cut in using a pastry blender/fork until the butter is uniformly mixed in.
  4. In a small mixing bowl, mix wet ingredients together, egg, cream, vanilla extract and orange extract. Mix into flour mixture until just combined.
  5. Using your hands pres the dough mixture into a 7 inch square. Cut into a 8 equal squares, then cut each square diagonally to make 16 triangle-shaped mini scones. Arrange on a baking sheet lined with parchment or a non stick mat.
  6. Bake for 12-17 minutes, or until golden brown.
For the Icing
  1. Mix the milk and the powdered sugar together until you get your desired consistency, than add the vanilla ad orange extracts. You may add more milk or more powdered sugar depending.
