What Are Buster Bars
Buster bars are a popular Dairy Queen treat consisting of classic soft serve, peanuts, and hot fudge. Soft serve Ice cream is layered with peanuts and hot fudge and coated in melted chocolate.
This homemade version combines yogurt and protein powder to form the base of the buster bars. The base is frozen until solid, dipped in melted chocolate, and topped with crushed peanuts. You get a similar flavor and consistency of the classic treat but with more protein and better for you ingredients.
Key Ingredients
These bars are made of simple ingredients and can easily be customized, making this an easy sweet treat to keep on hand. If there is a substitution you’ll find it below:

- Semi-sweet chocolate chips or chunks: substitute with milk chocolate or dark chocolate. Use a refined sugar free chocolate bar to keep this low sugar if desired.
- AE Dairy Sweet Cream Whole Milk Yogurt: use any flavor of yogurt, I prefer whole milk yogurt or Greek yogurt for a thick consistency.
- Coconut oil: add coconut oil to the chocolate when melting for the perfect consistency. Unsalted butter or ghee can be used as a substitute.
- Protein powder: use any brand of protein powder desired, I like vanilla but any flavor can be used to accompany the flavored yogurt.
- Peanuts: chopped peanuts add texture on top of the bars and give them their iconic buster bar look. Cashews or almonds will also work.
- Natural creamy peanut butter: I prefer natural peanut butter that has no added sugar, any peanut butter will work. Could substitute for crunchy peanut butter, cashew butter, almond butter, or macadamia nut butter.
- Sticks: while this is not an “ingredient” it is a tool you will need for these treat bars. Popsicle sticks, plastics spoons, cake pop sticks, or wooden skewers will all work.
How To Make The Buster Bars

- Mix together yogurt, protein powder, and peanut butter.
- Form into bars, insert sticks, and freeze.
- Dip bars in melted chocolate and topped with peanuts.

- Line a sheet pan with parchment paper and scoop the yogurt mixture into 8 round or rectangular shapes. Place a popsicle stick or paper straw into the center of each bar. Freeze for 20 minutes until set.

Supplies I Recommend
- Rubber Spatula – a must have! I like these because they don’t come apart so I don’t have to worry about water getting inside the spatula and causing mold.
- Pyrex Mixing Bowl Set – I love this set of nesting bowls. I use them for everything, Pyrex glass does not break easily so you can trust on these bowls for years, plus they come in 3 useful sizes and can be stacked!
- Paper Straws – I usually have paper straws on hand and I used them as popsicle sticks in this recipe. Simply cut in half and you have a perfectly sized handle. Popsicle sticks, plastic spoons, or wooden skewers will also work.
More Better For You Sweet Treats
- Double Chocolate Banana Snacking Cake – this cake uses bananas and chocolate milk for the perfect consistency.
- Cottage Cheese Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough – edible cookie dough? What more do you need!
- Protein Chocolate Pudding – a silky chocolate pudding with extra protein.
- Cottage Cheese Chocolate Banana Oat Muffins – free of refined sugar and perfectly sweet.
My Favorite Protein Powder
Equip Prime Protein
This is my favorite brand of protein powder for several reasons. First being, the taste is amazing – it doesn’t have a chalky after taste and the flavors are real but not overpowering. Second, it’s from grass-fed beef isolate and not whey which makes it much easier on my gut and doesn’t cause me to break out like whey protein does. Third, it’s sourced from real ingredients and packs 21 grams of protein per scoop!
