Highlights of these crispy oven baked cream cheese wontons and why you’ll love them:

Delicious filling: the filling for these is so simple and tasty, flavored with soy sauce, rice vinegar, and sriracha for a little heat. Feel free to get creative and add other flavorings.

Just simple ingredients: all you need for these Rangoon’s is cream cheese, jalapenos, rice wine vinegar, soy sauce, sriracha, salt, pepper, garlic powder, wonton wrappers, and avocado or olive oil for coating.

Crowd favorite: these are the perfect bite with a hint of spice and the perfect crunch. They look so elegant as part of a tablescape or as the main appetizer. Serve on a platter garnished with sesame seeds and fresh herbs with your favorite dipping sauces.

Rangoon’s can be folded however you desire: I like these folded into the center to create little pillows but they can also be folded in half to form simple triangles.

Great finger food: These are the perfect 1 or 2 bite snack, making them great for parties or casual gatherings.

Oven-fried: These are baked so there is no mess of frying in oil and they can easily be made in batches and you don’t have to worry about hot oil or the Rangoon’s burning. Plus you’re saving some calories! Oven fry these in avocado oil or olive oil, you could also use olive oil spray.

Crispy Baked Cream Cheese Rangoons

Just like a traditional crab rangoon, these are filled with a cream cheese mixture and baked until golden brown. You could also add in imitation crab or shrimp for a mix of flavors. These take less oil since there is no deep frying, making them a bit lighter!

Grocery Store List & Substitutions for the wontons:

  • Cream cheese: can substitute vegan cream cheese as needed. Full fat cream cheese is my preference, but low fat cream cheese can be used as well.
  • Soy sauce: can be substitute for coconut aminos or tamari if needed. Coconut aminos is slightly thicker and has a sweeter taste than soy sauce, so I often prefer it more.
  • Jalapenos: i love adding fresh jalapenos for a bit of texture and spice. Pickled jalapenos can be a substitute in a pinch.
  • Sesame oil, canola oil, peanut oil or avocado oil: I use avocado oil for brushing my wontons but any high heat oil will work or use cooking spray.
  • Kosher salt: any sea salt or Himalayan salt will work!
  • Fresh cracked black pepper: can be optional, add a bit more flavor.
  • Garlic powder: can substitute onion powder or fresh garlic cloves. I like a lot of garlic flavor so I add extra.
  • Wonton wrappers: most grocery stores have these in the produce section, near fresh herbs and minced garlic/ginger. If not, local Asian stores will carry them. You will not need the whole pack, any leftover can be stored in the freezer. If all you can find is egg roll wrappers, you can use them and roll them into egg roll, you just wont get as many.
  • Dipping sauce: I like sweet and sour sauce, duck sauce, any hot sauce, Thai sweet chili sauce, or just plain soy sauce!

How to Make Crispy Baked Cream Cheese Rangoons (with step by step instructions):

Let’s talk a little about how to make these crispy wontons (The printable instructions are in the recipe card below.)

Quick overview:

  • Prepare cream cheese mixture.
  • Fill and fold wontons.
  • Brush with oil.
  • Bake until crisp and enjoy.

1: Combine cream cheese, soy sauce, rice vinegar, jalapeno, sriracha, and seasonings in a medium bowl.

2. Add about a tablespoon of filling to the center of a wonton wrapper. Use your finger to wet all edges with water. Fold all four corners together towards the center and pinch to seal each corner of the wonton. Repeat will the remaining filling.

3. Once all wontons have been filled, place wontons on a sheet pan and brush with oil or spray with cooking spray. This helps to get the wontons nice and crispy in the oven.

4. I like to sprinkle them with sesame seeds before baking for a fun addition.

5. Bake at 400 degrees F for 14-16 minutes, until the wontons are nice and crispy and golden brown. Serve immediately with your favorite dipping sauces.

Tongs – a must have kitchen tool!

USA Pan Half Sheet Pan – my go-to baking sheets, these are truly non-stick and clean up nicely.

Rubber Spatula – a must have! Easily combine the cheese mixture with a rubber spatula. I like these because they don’t come apart so I don’t have to worry about water getting inside the spatula and causing mold.
