Ingredients List and Substitutions:

Below are notes about each ingredients and substitutions for ingredients that can be swapped or left out of the recipe:

  • Bacon: an kind of bacon with work for this recipe, it adds a nice salty touch.
  • Butter: I prefer unsalted butter so I can control the salt better, we also have salt from the bacon. Olive oil or avocado oil can be a substitute.
  • Onion: red onion, white onion, or yellow onions will work in the here. A finely diced shallot will also work, if you do not like onion, omit it.
  • Celery: add as much celery as you prefer. This cooks down so it isn’t crunchy.
  • Carrots: add as many carrots as you’d like, slice into thin coins or small cubes.
  • Garlic: add as many fresh garlic cloves as desired, I use upwards of around 4 or 5 cloves. Jarred minced garlic can be used as well.
  • Italian seasoning: store-bought Italian seasoning is an easy way to add some extra flavor. Dried thyme or parsley will also work.
  • All-purpose flour: this helps to thickened the pot pie mixture, gluten-free flour can be a substitute.
  • Chicken broth or stock: any stock works for this recipe. Use beef stock, chicken bone broth, beef bone broth, or vegetable broth.
  • Milk: whole milk or 2% milk work best here, heavy cream can be used for a super rich mixture. Non-dairy milks like unsweetened, unflavored oat milk or almond milk will work as well.
  • Shredded chicken: shredded chicken breasts, chicken thighs, or chicken tenders can work here. Use leftover rotisserie chicken for a short cut. Chicken can be baked or cooked in the slow cooker/Instant pot and then shredded, poached chicken is another option. Shredded turkey will also work.
  • Peas: frozen peas are best here so they don’t get mushy but fresh peas will also work. I do not recommend canned peas as they are a bit too soft.
  • Pie crust: store-bought frozen pie crust or homemade pie crust both work, if making homemade pie crust make sure to roll it out thinly so it cooks completely. Grab a tube of pie dough, not a pre-formed pie crust. A large round cookie cutter or a lid to a large jar can work to cut pie crust rounds. Use puff pastry or biscuit dough as a substitute.

How to make the Easy Homemade Mini Chicken Pot Pies in the Air Fryer (with step by step instructions):

Let’s talk a little about how to make these mini pot pies (The printable instructions are in the recipe card below.)

Quick overview:

  • Sauté bacon with carrots, onion, celery, and garlic. Season.
  • Add in flour, cook until absorbed.
  • Mix in broth and milk, cook until combined.
  • Add in shredded chicken and peas. Divide into three ramekins.
  • Cut pie crust and top filled ramekins.
  • Air fry until golden brown and enjoy.
  1. In a large sauté pan heat butter over medium high heat. Add in bacon and cook for 4-5 minutes or until the bacon starts to get crispy.
  2. Add in the diced carrots, celery, onion, and garlic. Cook for another 3-4 minutes until the veggies start to soften. Season.
  3. Sprinkle flour over the cooked vegetables and stir to combine, cook for 2-3 minutes or until the flour has cooked out.
  4. Add in the chicken stock.

5. Add in the milk and mix to combine everything.

6. To the skillet mix in shredded chicken and frozen peas. Fold gently to combine. Adjust seasoning as needed.

7. Grease each ramekin with cooking spray, evenly divide the chicken mixture between the three ramekins.

8. Roll the pie dough out on a clean surface use a round cookie cutter or large lid to cut rounds about 1″ larger than the ramekin, you will need three. Place one pie crust on top of each, press down to seal. If desired, cut four small slits in the top of each crust – this is more for looks, it doesn’t change the cooking process. There is no need to egg wash the pie crust before baking.

9. Preheat air fryer to 350 degrees, place the constructed pot pies in the basket and air fry for 15 minutes or until the pie crust is golden brown. Carefully remove from the air fryer and enjoy immediately.

Tools I used for this air fryer recipe:

  • Rubber Spatula – a must have! I like these because they don’t come apart so I don’t have to worry about water getting inside the spatula and causing mold.
  • Cast Iron PanI love my cast iron pan for browning, searing, sautéing, and more! Once seasoned, it’s so easy to clean. Not to mention affordable, this 12″ pan is the perfect size for many recipes.
  • Instant 6 qt. Air Fryer – Sleek and functional, the perfect size for 2-3 people. I like this because it has a tray in the bottom which make cleaning easy and it allows for air to circulate evenly. It has a large tray so you don’t have to do so many batches and a window to see into the air fryer while cooking! Any brand of air fryer will work for this recipe.

Recipe FAQs:

Can pot pies be cooked in the air fryer?

Yes! Air fryer pot pies give you a crispy crust and perfectly cooked, creamy filling in a fraction of the time it would take to bake in the oven. Making these into individual pot pies helps them cook even quicker. The pie crust get flaky and a bit crispy in the air fryer making it the perfect addition to the rich filling.

Can you put a metal pan in the air fryer?

Yes. You can use any oven-proof dish in the air fryer, whether it’s made of glass, ceramic, metal, or silicone. Stainless steel pots and pans are also safe to use in an air fryer so long as any additional parts, such as the handles, are not made of materials that could melt like plastic. Air fryers do not cook the same way as microwaves making them safe for metal.

How long do you cook a pre-made frozen pot pie in the air fryer?

To cook a personal frozen pot pie such as Marie Callender’s pot pie – simply air fry from frozen at 350 degrees F for 20-22 minutes until warmed through. It doesn’t get much simpler!

How do you store leftover chicken pot pie?

Warm pot pie can be cooled and scooped out of the ramekins and store in air tight containers in the fridge for 2-3 days. The best way to reheat is in the microwave, although the crust will not be as flaky and crispy.

This delicious pot pie will be your new weeknight go to, tender chicken and crispy bacon in a creamy sauce topped with a flaky crust. Name a better combo than that! I top my mini pot pies with a sprinkle of flaky salt and some fresh herbs. I love that this easy meal takes less time to bake than a traditional large pot pie, great for hungry kids on busy weeknights.

Since the chicken is cooked through all you need to do is ensure the top crust gets cooked completely. Puff pastry can also be used as a substitute to pie crust. A bag of frozen mixed vegetables is a good short cut to chopping fresh veggies. The air fryer method is a great way to make dinner without turning on the oven. Enjoyed these at your own dinner table?
