This Hugo spritz cocktail in a can is a fun and refreshing summer drink! Sparkling water, St. Germain, prosecco, and lime juice. These are so fun served directly in the sparkling water cans. Garnish with lots of fresh mint and a lime wedge. Any type of cocktail that calls for sparkling water can be made like this, but my favorite is the Hugo spritz. Use whatever type of sparkling water you prefer, lime, lemon, and plain work best for this recipe.

These are so fun for a girls night or a day at the pool, serving the cocktail directly in the can is a creative twist and creates fewer dishes! Garnish with your favorite like lime wedges, fresh mint sprigs, fresh basil, or edible flowers. Glass or paper straws add a fun touch as well.

Highlights of this canned cocktail and why you’ll love it:

  • Quick and creative: these are so fun to serve at parties or for crowds! Serving directly in the cans is a unique way to serve cocktails. You can get creative with your garnishes based on holidays or events.
  • Simple cocktail: all you need for this cocktail is prosecco, sparkling water (we already have the cans!), St. Germain, and lime juice! These are simple and light, perfect for any palate.
  • Great for outdoors: since these are not served in glass, they are great to serve outside as you don’t have to worry about glass breaking or loosing glasses.
  • Endless combinations: any of your favorite cocktails can be made in a can such as this!

Ingredient List & Ingredient Notes:

  • Sparkling water: any brand or flavor will work! I like lime or lemon flavor the best. Cans on tonic water or club soda will also work.
  • St. Germain: there is no substitution for this, it’s the elderflower flavor that makes the dish.
  • Prosecco: use your favorite type of prosecco here! Champagne can work if needed.
  • Lime juice: fresh lime juice is best here but store-bought lime juice can be used in a pinch.
  • Mint: fresh mint makes the perfect garnish!
  • Fresh limes: since you have fresh lime juice, you might as well add a fresh lime wedge.

How to make the Hugo Spritz Cocktail in a Can (with step by step instructions):

Let’s talk a little about how to make this fun canned cocktail (The printable instructions are in the recipe card below.)

Quick overview:

  • Remove tops from cans and pour out a portion of the sparkling water.
  • Add in other ingredients and ice.
  • Stir, garnish, and enjoy!

1. Prepare garnishes like fresh lime, mint, and any other herbs or flowers.

2. Use a can opener to remove the tops of the cans, careful as they can be sharp. Remove half of the sparkling water from each can, set aside for more cocktails.

3. Add in the St. Germain, fresh lime juice, and prosecco to the can. Stir to combine and top with ice. Garnish as desired and finish off with a straw, enjoy immediately!

Tools I used for this canned cocktail recipe:

  • Can opener: my favorite can opener, it is sleek and affordable and stays sharp for a long time.
  • Glass straws: I like these short glass straws so I don’t have to have a giant straw sticking out my my drinks. There are just 6″ making them great for regular sized glasses and cans.
  • Pairing knife: I love these boxwood kitchen knives by Pallares Solsona, the carbon steel stays sharp for a while and I just love the look and design.

Recipe FAQs:

What kind of sparkling water is best for this recipe?

I used the Waterloo brand mojito mocktail sparkling water for this recipe because I had it on hand, but any brand or flavor will work. Lemon, lime, or plain favors will work the best. Keep in mind the St. Germain has an elderflower flavor so you want a water that will pair well with that.

What is a Hugo spritz?

The Hugo spritz cocktail is an Italian cocktail made with sparkling water, prosecco, lime, and St. Germain. The addition of mint and fresh lime brings bright and zesty flavors to this refreshing elderflower cocktail. Very similar to an Aperol Spritz cocktail.
